South Africa’s F1 World Champion Jody Scheckter was born at East London, where BRM’s Graham Hill wrested the 1962 drivers’ title from Team Lotus’ Jim Clark. Scheckter continued to race Formula Ford in Britain, graduating to F1 with McLaren in the ’72 USGP. US F5000 champion in ’73, Jody won F1 races for Tyrrell – notably the ’76 Swedish GP in its six-wheeled P34 – and Wolf on its maiden appearance in ’77. He joined Ferrari for ’79, beating team-mate Gilles Villeneuve to land the crown. Jody’s bold crash helmet design remained constant. He is now a passionate organic farmer in Hampshire.
