Le Mans Classic - Plateau Two Entry List
Plateau Two at the Le Mans Classic is for cars from 1949 to 1956, a period which saw the 24-Hours reestablish itself as a major motor race. Alas the entry does not feature a Ferrari 166 MM, the model which won the 1949 race in the hands of Luigi Chinetti (later to become the driving force behind the succesful N.A.R.T team) and Peter MItchell-Thompson (the aristocrat and owner of the Ferrari, who only drove one 72-minute stint in the race) but it does include from the latter end of the time period C and D-Type Jaguars, Maseratis and even an early Lotus.
A delight of each plateau is that is includes not on the cars that challeneged for outright wins but also the oft-forgotten marques that founght for the class wins or even the prestigious Index de Performance trophy. Hence we see Panhard on the grid, along with a number of Deutsch-Bonnet (better known as DBs), the innovative Jowett Javelin and a DKW.
The classic British sportscars are represented by MG and Austin-Healey, and unmissable should be the unique Cadillac 'Monster' from 1950 that took 11th overall in the hands of Briggs Cunningham and Phil Walters. This period also saw the first appearance of Porsche in 1951, and a number 365s in the entry reflect the growing prescence of the German company.
