Michael Lyons and Martin Stretton took a win apace in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship’s two races at Brands Hatch this weekend.
Having been quickest by half a second over Andy Wolfe in Saturday morning’s qualifying, Michael Lyons led the field away in race one in his Williams FW07B, pushing hard and never headed in the 25-minute race. A dominant lead was wiped out when the safety car came out after Wolfe and Steve Hartley tangled at Druids on lap 11, but once the field were released again Lyons pulled away once more to win from Nick Padmore’s Shadow.
Sunday saw a very different script, with Lyons out after just a lap, handing the lead to Matin Strettons’ Tyrrell 012. It wasn’t plain sailing for Stratton as Hartley closed in and was pushing to go past, but the staff car appearing late in the race denied him the chance to take the lead.
