Nathan Kinch was the star of the opening Masters HGP races at the 2014 FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA.
In front of a massive and appreciative crowd of over 100,000 people, the Aberdeen-based driver took victory in both races.
The magnificent machinery on show was a big hit with fans and current Formula One drivers alike. Kinch started the opening race on pole position in his ex-John Watson McLaren MP4 and was chased in the opening stages of the race by Jean-Michel Martin (Fittipaldi F8) until the Belgian legend suffered a deflating tyre and pitted to retire. That allowed Charles Nearburg (Williams FW07) up to second place and Spanish ace Joaquin Folch third in his Bernie Ecclestone-owned Brabham BT49. Andrew Haddon (Williams FW07), Greg Thornton (March 761) and Doug Mockett (Wolf WR6) rounded out the top six. Thornton was the best of the Pre-78 drivers.
The race one result determined the grid for race two which allowed Kinch to start from pole again and he bolted at the lights and stormed away to a second victory from Nearburg and Folch. Martin was the hero of the second race as he battled up to fourth place ahead of Haddon and Thornton. Bud Moeller also put in a great show in his ex-Gilles Villeneuve Ferrari 312T in race two, making his way up from 15th on the grid following an off in Saturday’s race to eighth overall. On aggregate, Kinch was a convincing class winner from Nearburg and Folch. Other class wins went to John Delane (Tyrrell 002), Thornton and James Hagan (Tyrrell 011).
The next events for Masters HGP season are on consecutive weekends in July at Mont Tremblant, July 11th-13th, and Road America, July 18th-20th.
